OSHA HAZWOPER 40 HOUR COURSE

HAZWOPER 40 hour training is for workers who are exposed to hazardous materials and could cause illness or injury if not handled properly. OSHA 40 hour training is required for workers that perform activities that expose or potentially expose them to hazardous materials. This 40-hour HAZWOPER training covers topics included in OSHA regulations, HAZWOPER standards, and DOT HAZMAT regulations.

Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are used in industries such as oil & gas drilling, process manufacturing, healthcare facilities, waste management, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy. The use of EMS requires HAZWOPER 40 Hour Training because employees will be exposed to hazardous materials on a regular basis when performing their job duties.

HAZWOPER 40 hour is designed to help workers understand and meet their responsibilities under OSHA regulations 29 CFR 1910.120 and provide general safety training for employees who are exposed to HAZMAT materials.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Understand OSHA regulations and how they regulate occupational safety
• Use site characterization to identify problems in your workplace and implement measures for eliminating hazards
• Encourage use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for identifying and handling hazardous materials.
• Familiarize yourself with compounds that may present fire, explosive, chemical or radiation hazards to limit exposure during work.
• Establish an effective Site Control Program to only contain workers in the hazardous area.
• Develop procedures for treating people exposed to hazardous substances by adding infected, injured or compromised persons into the site control programs targeted at protecting individuals from toxicants

The Hazardous Waste Operations Response Standard (HAZWOPER) standard 29 CFR 1910.120 is a section of OSHA’s HAZARDOUS WASTE OPERATIONS AND HAZARDOUS WASTE TRANSPORTATION STANDARDS. HAZWOPER 40 Hour training is required by the Hazardous Waste Operations Response Standard (HAZWOPER) for all employees that could be exposed to hazardous substances. HAZWOPER regulations are enforced in order to ensure workers’ safety and environmental protection when performing HAZMAT activities. HAZWOPER 40 Hour Training is designed for workers who could potentially come into contact with or breathe airborne concentrations of toxic chemicals via skin contact, ingestion or inhalation during job duties. OSHA HAZWOPER standards are intended to prevent illness and injury resulting from exposure to hazardous substances produced at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. After you are hired for a job, your employer should provide you with the CDL, OSHA HAZ Training, and any other special training needed to perform HAZMAT clean-up duties. The HAZWOPER 40 Hour training can be completed online or in-person through an OSHA HAZWOPER certified training program. Employers are required to maintain HAZWOPER 40 hour training records for each employee trained.

Employees that work at sites where Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Hazardous Waste Regulations apply will require HAZWOPER 40 hour safety training. This applies if your job requires you to handle wastes regulated by these regulations – e.g., is involved in remediating contaminated soil or wastewater, recycling of bulbs or pesticides, cleaning up an accidental spill of hazardous chemicals.

HAZWOPER 40 hour training is required for employees performing clean-up duties at uncontrolled waste sites, remediation projects, and HAZMAT clean-ups.

HAZWOPER 40 hour HAZMAT personnel are required to wear proper, protective PPE as outlined in OSHA standards 29 CFR 1910.120 and 1910.139. Personnel performing emergency response operations must follow Emergency Response Team guidelines established by the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

All personnel wearing respiratory protection must use an air-purifying respirator whenever performing work where there is exposure to chemical, biological or radiological contaminants. HAZWOPER 40 HAZMAT air-purifying respirators may not be used for respiratory protection in atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).

To maintain HAZWOPER certification, it is necessary to complete an 8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher course each year. If the deadline is missed, a 40-hour HAZWOPER course may need to be retaken.
